Studying in New Zealand

At Havelock North High School we offer the National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA). Our academic years runs from February to December and is divided into four terms. Please click the blue button below to download our application form.

Programmes of Study

The school year begins in the last week of January and ends in early December. The majority of school programmes are for one year.  There are four terms, with two weeks holiday in April, July and September. Students from overseas may attend for less than one year, but in most cases would not be eligible for qualifications. A broad-based multi-level curriculum leads to a wide choice of academic subjects in the senior school.  In total, over 30 subjects are available. Where students gain New Zealand qualifications and fulfil appropriate entry requirements, they have the opportunity to enrol in universities or other tertiary institutions, locally or in other regions.

English Language Assistance

For students who require English language assistance in order to access the subjects offered, the school provides specialist teaching and, when necessary, subject support. Provision is also made for students to gain particular national or international ESOL and English language keyboarding qualifications.  Most students prepare for IELTS or TOFL examinations.

 Uniform

All students up to and including Year 12 students wear school uniforms.  A new summer and winter uniform costs approximately NZ$600.  In their final year at school, Year 13 students do not wear a uniform. Tidy, casual clothes of the student's choice are permitted.

The Havelock North uniform is purchased exclusively from 'Threads', the on-campus uniform shop. New and pre-loved school uniforms can be purchased from here. More details can be found on the link below.

Immigration

Once you have completed most of the enrolment process, you will then need to apply for a New Zealand student visa. You can find out more by visiting the NZ Immigration Services website.

Insurance

International students must have appropriate and current medical and travel insurance while studying in New Zealand. Full details on entitlements to publicly funded health services are available through the Ministry of Health and can be viewed on their website.
